Born and raised in New York/New England I became hooked on fishing at the age of three. Then, to the dismay of my parents, they discovered that I had climbed out of my bedroom window and walked ½ a mile to a deep running river. Initially relieved and then angry, my father found me with a self-made fishing rod (a willow branch- equally handy as a switch), using some thread as line and a safety pin as a hook. Beside me, a can of worms had yielded a bucket full of “tiger fish” (perch, actually, but to a little kid they were striped orange and black like a tiger). It is noteworthy that he has always since claimed not to have previously taken me fishing. If fishing has a self-starter, I guess I was it.

Through childhood, my hobbies included building fishing rods and lures, keeping aquariums, and eventually building and stocking a farm pond. Fishing and a love of the outdoors was reinforced by summers spent along the shore, at inland lakes, boating, swimming, catching fish and crabs in tidal pools, body surfing, sailing, hiking, and picnicking. One summer in Gloucester Massachusetts, I adopted a seagull, named Sylvester, and later released it as its health returned. Then in college as a dual biology-chemistry major, I was drawn to study marine biology and oceanography at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

My other job (the real job) is as a General Manager of a division in a Fortune 100 Company. Between that and growing up within the New York City commuting area, I am a time-starved no-nonsense guy that will not accept unpleasant surprises on my limited vacation days. When I go on vacation, I need a vacation -not a string of problems with contingency plans to overcome a misrepresented and ill-planned nightmare. Nope, I call that work and that scenario exists the rest of the year. I want a vacation wrought with smooth execution and numerous levels of happiness.

Quite clearly, fishing and wildlife possessed me then and it has not stopped. Early on, I believed “the world is so full of a number of things that I am sure we should all be as happy as kings”. Now with experience, education, and money I am very very fussy as to what are “good fishing” as well as good lodging. Call me and find out about your ADVENTURE IN PARADISE!
